Signature of the Declaration on Oceans by OCTs

Under the Chairmanship of Eugene Rhuggenaath, Prime Minister of Curaçao, the Overseas Countries and Territories signed on 16 October 2019 in Brussels, a Declaration on Oceans as a commitment towards the sustainability of our seas.

The Declaration reminds that with a combined Economic Exclusive Zone of more than 17 million km2 and 37% of their waters covered by Marine Protected Areas, Oceans are of strategic importance to OCTs, and their existence and their survival are inseparably linked to them.

The signed document recognises the importance to act individually and collectively, and calls for more actions to conserve Oceans and enhance their economic and social value. The Declaration also reminds the importance to develop regional, European, global and inter-OCT collaborations as key aspects for healthy Oceans.
